I have no photo today.

Too busy studying for my MCAT to deal with photos right now, but on the MD Basketball recruiting front, Shaquille Cleare has committed. Now we just need to hear from McGary, who said he’s probably looking at an Octoberish announcement and the Harrison Twins. Yes, the twins are 2013, but hopefully Shaq pushes them to us.

Also, I heard there’s a hurricane coming. The Mayans seem more and more credible every day.

Fantasy football season is in full gear. Drafts almost nightly…

That is my collection of random thoughts for tonight.

Was it worth it?

So this photo was one I shot for the Diamondback for a small article on an event called the Campus MovieFest. This guy was a student director, and he had access to the projection booth at the Hoff Theatre in the Stamp Student Union. Well it turns out if you crawl out of the projection booth onto the ledge in front of the projection window, you can get a picture of someone inside the booth. Unfortunately, the ledge was not designed to support people and there is no railing or barrier between you and the floor below, but as long as you don’t make any sudden movements and stay on the sections reinforced by pieces of plywood, you should be fine. At least that’s what he told me. In any case, this was lit from the inside by two flashes through umbrellas, I wanted to really create the look of the projector shining out through the window. The image by itself probably wasn’t worth it, but I did have a lot of fun creating this image, even though it was really hot in the booth.

Almost

So, taking family photos with a 2.5 year old is always an adventure. Sophie insisted on looking everywhere but the camera, and when you tell her to smile, well, her smile doesn’t quite look right. That being said, with respect to Sophie, this photo is not bad, it’s pretty close. However, my Aunt Ashley is the only one who sees my light stand toppling over to the right of my camera. I decided to worry about that later and grab this shot, which I find cute in its own way. Of course a mom would be watching out for falling objects, while everyone else waits for the picture to be taken.

This next one is actually an outtake. I was just testing the lighting between shots, and when I uploaded them to my computer I found this gem. Of course Christine if fixing her hair, the baby is totally distracted, Dad looks bored, and Mom is fixing hair/clothing/etc. I like photos that tell a story, and this one seems to say something about life, at least I think so.

And this is as close as we got. All 3 shot with the Sigma 30mm on my 1d mkII, with one flash off camera through an umbrella.

Last night in Houston

I missed a couple posts while travelling back to Rockville, and just readjusting to my schedule here, but I’m starting up again. I shot some photos the last night in Houston, and I have plenty that I need to hurry up and edit, but here’s a preview.

From my trip to Cancun

This is my dad, just after we got off the plane. Shot natural light at f/4.0 with the 17-40L at 37mm.

One more from the shoot.

1/160 @ f/2.8, ISO50 on my 5d. I think it came out nicely.

Running

Kind of a random photo, but while flipping through my lightroom catalog, it caught my eye. Taken at the Rockville Rotary Twilight Runfest.

Sophie’s face, priceless

This is Sophie’s favorite face, well at least it’s the face she makes the most when talking to me. I’ve never met a 2.5 year old who thinks she’s an adult/teenager more so than her. I can’t imagine what she’ll be like in 10 years. Maybe she’ll calm down by then.

Quickshot

I took some photos last night with my cousins, Christine and Nicole. I carried all this lighting gear out here, so I figured I pretty much have to pull it out eventually before I leave. It’s been so hot here lately though, so I haven’t been to motivated to take it all out, set it up, and break it back down, but I made it happen last night. Here’s a photo of Nicole, with two lights, one flash off camera right, and slightly behind her for a little bit of back lighting and a light just barely camera left as the main light. We only did two takes of this shot, and I only shot 3 frames, but if you time it right, that’s all you need. I have some other nice shots from this shoot, but I haven’t edited them yet.

Better late than never.

Lest we forget him, he’s a photo of a photo of a much younger Gary Williams.
